General Information
The World Transplant Games is held every two years
(2009/2011/2013/etc). These Games have a number of aims
and objectives both for the participants, spectators,
the Association, the hosting country and public at
large.
These are:
-
For athletes:
Being able to compete against their piers and to
represent their country on the world stage;
-
For athletes & their families:
A wonderful opportunity to show appreciation to donors
and donor families for their act of consent to allow
organs to be transplanted and save their lives.
-
All concerned:
An opportunity to meet old friends and make new
friends during the week of competitions and social
events;
-
For the athletes:
Showing that there is continuity and quality of life
after a transplant and that transplant recipients can
be actively involved in sport and other physical
activities while being economically active citizens;
-
All concerned:
An opportunity to raise awareness for the need of
organ donation and transplantation in the hosting
country as many people wait for organs to be donated.
Also to increase the number of organs donated and
transplants done during and following the Games.
The World Transplant Games 2009 will be held in
Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia
from Saturday 22 to
Sunday 30 August 2009.
Gold Coast is stretched out along beaches more than 20km
long and known for its great weather and surfing. It
caters for tourists and therefore has places like Sea
World, Casinos, wonderful shopping centres, etc.
The SA Team will, more than likely, fly into Brisbane
and be collected by bus and driven down to Gold Coast
which is about 100km South of Brisbane.
The Opening Event as well as Gala Dinner and other
special events will be held in the Gold Coast Convention
and Exhibition Centre where the Local Organising
Committee will also be located and where registration
will take place.
All meals – Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner – will also be
enjoyed at the Convention Centre.
Accommodation for the athletes and accompanying persons
has been arranged in beautiful apartment blocks (4 & 5
star rated) which are all within walking distance from
the Convention Centre as well as the beach – in fact
many are on the road along the beach or closer to the
Convention Centre. The apartments sleep 2/4/6 persons
and all have their own and en suite bathrooms, kitchens
(with all necessary facilities for catering), lounges,
etc. Many have swimming pools, Jacuzzis (some in the
rooms), tennis courts and gyms.
